Blount County Landfill Alternative: Dump Concrete Free at SMSG in 2026

← All Posts··5 min read

If you Googled "Blount County landfill" or "where to dump concrete Blount," you probably ended up staring at a $60 per ton tipping fee, a residency check, and hours that close before you even finish your workday. That was the reality until this summer.

Smoky Mountain Sand & Gravel opened in Maryville at 245 Brookdale Rd on July 8, 2026, and clean concrete drops are FREE right now during our free-load period. That's the short version. Here's the long one.

What's Actually Wrong with the Landfill Option

The Blount County Landfill takes concrete at C&D rates. On paper that's $60 per ton, but there are three things that make it worse than the number suggests.

One: they refuse non-Blount haulers. If your truck plates say Knox, Loudon, Sevier, or anywhere else, they can turn you away at the scale. That's on top of any residency verification they might do on the driver.

Two: hours are tight. Weekdays only, roughly 7 AM to 3 PM. If you're finishing a Friday demo at 4 PM, you're stuck holding the load through the weekend. No Saturday. Full breakdown in our Blount County Landfill hours post.

Three: per-ton pricing punishes big loads. A tandem dump of clean concrete is around 20 tons. At $60 a ton that's $1,200 to bury a material that's 100 percent recyclable. A tri-axle can run $1,600 or more. Every load you drop there is money that could have gone toward the next job.

The SMSG Alternative

We're 15 to 25 minutes from most of Blount County. Address is 245 Brookdale Rd, Maryville TN 37801. Right now clean concrete and asphalt drops are FREE during our free-load period. When the promo ends, we go back to flat per-vehicle pricing that still runs a fraction of what the landfill charges.

Here's what the price looks like both ways:

| Vehicle | SMSG Regular Rate | Right Now | Landfill (~$60/ton) | |---------|-------------------|-----------|---------------------| | Pickup | $40 | Free | $60-$120 | | Single-axle trailer | $80 | Free | $300-$480 | | 10-yard roll-off | $100 | Free | $780-$960 | | Tandem trailer | $120 | Free | $600-$840 | | Single-axle dump | $140 | Free | $720-$960 | | Tandem dump | $170 | Free | $1,200-$1,440 | | Tri-axle | $200 | Free | $1,620-$2,100 |

That is not a typo. Anything larger than a small pickup, SMSG is dramatically cheaper. Right now it's free either way.

Why We Can Take It Cheaper

The landfill is burying your concrete. It takes up cubic yards of hole in the ground that they can't sell to anyone else. From their point of view, your load is inventory going the wrong way.

We're a recycling yard. Your concrete goes through the crusher, comes out as recycled crushed aggregate (RCA), and we sell it back to contractors for road base, driveway pads, backfill, and drainage work. Your load is our inbound raw material. The math reverses.

That's why we can afford to take it for nothing during the free-load period. Even at the regular flat-fee pricing, we make our margin on the RCA sales, not on the tip fees.

What We Take

Same as any concrete recycling operation. Clean concrete, asphalt, brick, block, masonry, natural stone. Rebar in concrete is fine, we pull steel during processing.

We can't take trash, wood, drywall, roofing, dirt-mixed debris, or hazardous material. If your load is mostly clean but has some scrap in it, call before you come. Number is (865) 999-0857.

Hours That Actually Work

  • Monday through Friday: 7 AM to 5 PM
  • Saturday: 8 AM to noon
  • Sunday: closed

We're one of the only clean concrete + asphalt operations in the region with real Saturday hours. That matters if you're running a weekend crew or catching up on tear-out.

Q: Is the free drop real, or is there a catch? A: Real. Clean concrete and clean asphalt only. No paperwork, no minimums, no gotcha fee at the gate. The promo will end at some point but there's no announced date.

Q: Do you take asphalt too? A: Yes. Asphalt millings and pavement chunks both. Full details on the asphalt disposal page.

Q: What happens when the free promo ends? A: We go back to flat per-vehicle pricing starting at $40 for a pickup. Still cheaper than the landfill for anything bigger than a small pickup load.
