These numbers are for planning. Real quantities can shift with site conditions, material gradation, and how the load goes down. For most projects, build in a 5 to 10 percent waste factor.
What is RCA?
Recycled Concrete Aggregate. It’s old concrete from demolition jobs that we crush back down into usable rock. Usually costs less than virgin stone, keeps tons of material out of the landfill, and holds up just as well for base work.
Common Uses
Driveways, parking lot base, backfill, utility trench fill, drainage beds, pipe bedding, gravel paths, and erosion control. For non-structural work it goes head-to-head with virgin crushed stone.

How do I calculate how many tons of gravel I need?
Multiply length by width in feet, multiply by depth in inches divided by 12, and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Multiply cubic yards by the material weight: about 1.4 tons per cubic yard for RCA crusher run and 1.35 for RCA #57.
How many cubic yards are in a ton of gravel?
About 0.7 cubic yards per ton for RCA crusher run (1 divided by 1.4) and about 0.74 for RCA #57. Virgin limestone is heavier, so a ton of it covers a little less.
How much area does a ton of crusher run cover?
At 4 inches deep, a ton of RCA crusher run covers about 58 square feet loose. At 2 inches it covers about 116 square feet, and at 6 inches about 39 square feet.
Should I order extra for compaction?
Yes. Crusher run and road base compact down when rolled or plate-tamped, so order about 15 percent more for driveways, pads, and base. Clean #57 barely compacts, so no extra is needed for drainage work.
How many tons fit in a dump truck?
A tandem dump truck usually hauls 12 to 15 tons of aggregate, and a single-axle hauls about 6 to 8. The calculator uses 12 tons per load to stay on the safe side.
