Best uses for #57 stone
- ✓French drains and curtain drains (wrapped in filter fabric)
- ✓Drainage backfill behind retaining walls
- ✓Pipe bedding and surround for drain and culvert pipe
- ✓Driveway top course over a compacted crusher run base
- ✓Gravel layer under slabs and footings to break up ground moisture
- ✓Dry wells, downspout outlets, and around foundation drains
Anywhere water needs to move, #57 is the right call. Where you need a hard surface that carries weight, use RCA crusher run instead, or put crusher run down as the base and #57 on top. For drains, line the trench with non-woven filter fabric so fine soil does not clog the stone over the years. See our French drain aggregate guide for trench sizing.
How much #57 stone do you need?
Here is the coverage per 100 square feet (a 10 by 10 foot area) at common depths, using 1.35 tons per cubic yard.
| Depth | Cubic yards per 100 sq ft | Tons per 100 sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 0.62 | 0.83 tons |
| 4 inches | 1.23 | 1.67 tons |
| 6 inches | 1.85 | 2.50 tons |
The math
Cubic yards = square feet x (depth in inches / 12) / 27
Tons = cubic yards x 1.35
Example at 4 inches: 100 x (4 / 12) / 27 = 1.23 cubic yards. 1.23 x 1.35 = 1.67 tons. For a French drain trench 50 feet long, 1 foot wide, and 18 inches of stone: 50 x 1 x (18 / 12) / 27 = 2.78 cubic yards, times 1.35 = about 3.75 tons.
Run your own numbers in the gravel calculator. Add about 10 percent for trench walls that are not perfectly straight.
RCA #57 vs virgin #57 stone
We only sell the recycled version. Here is a general comparison against quarry #57 so you can decide if it fits your job.
| Factor | RCA #57 | Virgin #57 |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Crushed and screened from clean concrete tear-outs | Blasted and crushed from a quarry |
| Drainage | Free-draining, open voids | Free-draining, open voids |
| Shape | Angular, locks together | Angular, locks together |
| Weight per yard | A little lighter, so a ton covers a bit more area | Slightly heavier per cubic yard |
| Look | Light gray to tan, some color variation | Uniform gray or blue-gray |
| Environmental | Keeps concrete out of the landfill, counts as recycled content | New material mined from the ground |
| Where to buy here | Our Maryville yard | We do not sell virgin stone |
Bottom line: for drains, backfill, and bedding, RCA #57 moves water the same way. If a plan calls out a specific DOT spec or you want a uniform decorative color, check with your engineer or call us first.

How our trucking service works →#57 stone FAQ
What is #57 stone?
#57 is a standard size of clean crushed stone, with pieces roughly 3/4 to 1 inch and no fines. Because there is no dust filling the gaps, water passes straight through it. Ours is RCA #57, made by crushing and screening clean concrete at our Maryville yard.
Is recycled #57 stone good for French drains?
Yes. It is clean, angular, and free-draining, which is what a French drain needs. Wrap the trench in filter fabric so soil does not migrate into the stone over time.
How much #57 stone do I need?
Plan on about 1.67 tons per 100 square feet at 4 inches deep. For a trench, multiply length by width to get square feet, then use the depth of stone. Our calculator does the math for you.
How much does #57 stone cost near Knoxville and Maryville?
Call (865) 999-0857 for current pricing. The rate depends on how many tons you need and whether you pick up at the yard or want it delivered.
Can I use #57 stone for a driveway?
Yes, as a top layer over a compacted crusher run base. On its own it will not pack tight and can rut or roll under tires, so it works best as the top 2 inches over 4 or more inches of crusher run.
Does #57 stone compact?
Not much. With no fines it settles and locks a little, but it never forms a hard, tight surface the way crusher run does. That open structure is exactly why it drains so well.
