Crusher Run vs #57 Stone: Which Is Right for Your Driveway Base?

If you're building a gravel driveway, sooner or later somebody at the yard will ask: "Crusher run or #57?" Pick wrong and you either fight ruts for three years or watch your driveway hold water every rainy season.

This post walks through what each one is, what it does, and where to use it.

Read that table twice. Those two rows about compaction and drainage are why one job wants crusher run and the other wants #57.

What Is Crusher Run?

Crusher run is a mix of stone sizes from about 3/4 inch down to fine dust (sometimes called "fines" or "stone dust"). Because it's a gradation instead of a single size, when you spread it and roll it, the small stuff fills the voids between the bigger chunks. Under compaction it locks together tight, almost like an unpaved concrete.

You'll also hear it called:

  • Dense grade aggregate (DGA)
  • 3/4 minus
  • Road base
  • ABC (aggregate base course)

Different regions use different names for what's basically the same product. In East Tennessee "crusher run" is what most yards call it.

What Is #57 Stone?

#57 stone is a clean, single-size aggregate, roughly 3/4 inch to 1 inch chunks. No fines. No dust. Just angular rock (if it's crushed) or round rock (if it's washed river). When you pour a pile of #57, water runs straight through. Kick the pile with your boot and the stones roll.

That's the fundamental difference. Crusher run is designed to lock together. #57 is designed to let water through.

Why Crusher Run Compacts and #57 Doesn't

It comes down to void space. A pile of #57 has big gaps between each stone because every stone is roughly the same size. Water and air fill those gaps. Stones can shift and roll.

Crusher run has a mix of sizes. The fines pack into the gaps between the bigger stones. When you drive over it or run a compactor, the fine material acts like glue, forcing the whole layer to move as one solid pad. That's why crusher run gets used for road base and #57 gets used for French drains.

Best Uses for Crusher Run

  • Driveway base layer. The bottom 4 to 6 inches of any gravel driveway should be a compactable material. Crusher run is the standard.
  • Shed and outbuilding pads. Under a shed, garage floor, or carport slab, crusher run gives a stable foundation.
  • Under paver patios. Compacted crusher run is the go-to base under concrete pavers.
  • Farm and equipment access roads. Where you need a hard surface that trucks and tractors can use without rutting.
  • Fill under concrete slabs. Anywhere a slab needs a compacted base.

Crusher run wants to be installed in lifts (thin layers), watered slightly, and compacted between each lift. Skip that step and it never reaches its full strength.

Best Uses for #57 Stone

  • French drains. The bulk of a French drain is #57 stone around the perforated pipe. Water moves through it freely.
  • Drainage layers. Anywhere you want water to pass through instead of pond on top.
  • Decorative top course. Some homeowners use #57 as the visible surface layer over a compacted crusher run base. Cleaner look than raw crusher run.
  • Pipe bedding. Around water, sewer, or drainage pipe where you want the pipe supported but water can flow.
  • Concrete mix aggregate. Ready-mix plants use #57 as their coarse aggregate.

If a job needs to shed water fast, #57 is your material. If it needs to hold shape under a load, it's not.

Cost

Prices bounce around with fuel and season, but in East TN you'll typically see:

  • Crusher run: In the ballpark of $20 to $35 per ton for local material, delivered.
  • #57 stone: Similar range, sometimes a few dollars more because it takes a second pass to screen out the fines.

What Happens If You Use the Wrong One

Crusher run as your top surface, when you wanted #57's drainage. After a heavy rain, the fines wash to the surface and slick over. Puddles form. Tire ruts don't drain out. In a bad case, the whole driveway turns muddy for a week after a storm.

#57 as your driveway base, when you wanted crusher run. Stones roll under tires, ruts form immediately, and the surface never firms up. You'll spend the next two years hauling stone back into the tire tracks. Every year you add more, and every year it disappears into the mud below.

The right combo for most gravel driveways is a compacted crusher run base with either more crusher run or a #57 top course depending on what look you want.

Layering the Two Together

If you want the best of both, use them in layers.

  1. Excavate 6 to 8 inches of soil down to a stable subgrade.
  2. Install geotextile fabric. Optional but worth the small cost. It keeps mud from pumping up through the base.
  3. Base layer: 4 inches of crusher run. Spread, water lightly, compact with a plate compactor or roller. Repeat in a second lift if needed.
  4. Optional top course: 2 inches of #57 stone. Gives you a clean, decorative surface that lets rain through instead of ponding.

You get a hard base that won't rut and a top layer that drains and looks good. Common combo on residential jobs.

Wet-Weather Behavior

East TN gets rain. A lot of it. That matters when you're picking a driveway material.

  • Crusher run holds shape under water but the surface can get slippery if it's not sloped for runoff. Aim for 1 to 2 percent grade.
  • #57 lets water through, so it never gets slick, but chunks migrate under tires. Fine for foot paths and drainage, harder for a heavily driven surface.

If your driveway sits on a slope or gets sheet flow off a hill above it, put crusher run on the driveway and a French drain of #57 alongside it. Two materials, two jobs.

How Much Do You Need?

For a standard 12-foot-wide driveway at 4 inches of base:

  • 1 ton of crusher run covers roughly 100 square feet at 4 inches depth
  • 1 ton of #57 covers about the same, but doesn't compact down

For a 12-by-60 driveway (720 sq ft) with a 4-inch base, budget about 7 to 8 tons of crusher run. Add a couple more tons if you're topping with #57.
