RCA Driveway Guide: Cost, Lifespan & RCA vs Gravel
TL;DR: For most East Tennessee driveways, RCA crusher run is the value pick. Lay 4 inches compacted for cars, 6 inches for trucks, compact in lifts, and contain the edges. It typically costs less than virgin crushed stone, packs harder, and lasts 20+ years with light upkeep. Call (865) 999-0857 for current RCA and delivery pricing.
This is our one-stop guide to an RCA driveway: what RCA is, what drives the cost, how many tons to order, how to install it, how long it lasts, and how it stacks up against regular gravel.
What Is RCA?
RCA stands for recycled concrete aggregate. It's old concrete (driveways, slabs, sidewalks, curbs, foundations) run through a crusher, stripped of rebar with magnets, and screened to size. At our Maryville yard it comes from clean concrete that contractors and homeowners drop off.
We produce two grades:
| Grade | What it is | Driveway use | |---|---|---| | RCA crusher run | 3/4" minus, fines included | The driving surface and main base. This is what people mean by "RCA driveway." | | RCA #57 | Clean ~3/4" to 1" pieces, no fines | Drainage layer under crusher run on wet or soft ground. Does not compact into a tight surface on its own. |

RCA Driveway Cost: What Drives the Total
We don't publish per-ton prices for RCA or delivery because they move with volume, distance, and fuel. Call (865) 999-0857 for current RCA and delivery pricing. What we can tell you is exactly what moves the number, so you walk in with a good estimate.
1. Tons needed
RCA is sold by the ton, so tonnage is the biggest lever. It comes from length, width, and depth.
2. Base depth
Going from 4 inches to 6 inches adds 50% more material. A fresh build over bare dirt needs more depth than a top-up over an existing driveway.
| Job | Typical compacted depth | |---|---| | Top-up over existing driveway | 2 to 4 in | | New driveway, cars and pickups, firm soil | 4 in | | New driveway, delivery trucks or soft clay | 6 in | | Farm lane, loaded trucks, equipment | 8 in, or #57 base under crusher run |
3. Delivery distance and truck size
Delivery is priced by distance from our yard at 245 Brookdale Rd, Maryville, and by how many loads it takes. Bigger jobs ride in larger dump trucks; tight access may need a smaller truck and more trips. You can also pick up at the yard in your own truck. See trucking for coverage.
4. Grading and site prep labor
If you hire it out, excavation, stripping topsoil, cutting a crown, and rolling are often a bigger share of the bill than the stone. DIY on a short driveway is doable with a rented plate compactor or roller.
5. Extras people forget
- Geotextile fabric over soft clay
- Edging (timbers, steel, or a grass shoulder)
- Culvert pipe where the driveway crosses a ditch
- Extra material to fix grade on a slope
- Sales tax on material and delivery
RCA vs virgin stone on cost
RCA generally costs less than virgin crushed stone. The raw material is recycled concrete that comes to our yard instead of a landfill, and it's crushed locally, so there's no quarry markup or long haul baked in. Exact numbers vary, so get a quote for your address.
How to Estimate Tons
Formula:
- Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Depth (ft) = cubic feet
- Cubic feet / 27 = cubic yards
- Cubic yards x 1.4 = tons
Depth in feet: 2 in = 0.17, 4 in = 0.33, 6 in = 0.5, 8 in = 0.67.
Example: 12 ft x 100 ft at 4 in compacted. 12 x 100 x 0.33 = 400 cu ft. 400 / 27 = 14.8 cu yd. 14.8 x 1.4 = about 21 tons.
Order roughly 20% extra to cover compaction and uneven subgrade.
| Driveway size | 4 in compacted | 6 in compacted | |---|---|---| | 10 x 50 ft | ~9 tons | ~13 tons | | 12 x 60 ft | ~12.5 tons | ~19 tons | | 12 x 100 ft | ~21 tons | ~31 tons | | 12 x 200 ft | ~41.5 tons | ~62 tons |
Tonnage before the compaction allowance. Skip the math with our aggregate calculator, and see tons vs cubic yards if you're comparing quotes.
How to Install an RCA Driveway
Almost every RCA driveway failure we see is an install problem, not a material problem.
- Strip and shape. Remove topsoil and roots down to firm subgrade. Shape a crown or cross slope of about 2% so water sheds off the sides.
- Compact the subgrade. Plate compactor or roller, at least two passes. On soft clay, lay geotextile fabric first so the stone doesn't push into the mud.
- Add a drainage layer if needed. On wet sites, a few inches of RCA #57 under the crusher run helps water move out.
- Lay crusher run in lifts. Spread 2 to 3 inches, wet it lightly, compact, then repeat. Dumping 6 inches at once leaves a fluffy surface that ruts.
- Contain the edges. Timbers, steel edging, or a firm grass shoulder keep the RCA from migrating outward.
- Final pass. Check grade with a long straightedge, fill low spots, and compact again.

How Long Does an RCA Driveway Last?
Installed right, 20 years or more, and with periodic refresh layers, about as long as you own the property. Three things give RCA its staying power:
- Angular pieces interlock. Crushed concrete has jagged edges that grab each other under compaction.
- Light self-cementing. Leftover unhydrated cement reactivates with moisture and lightly binds the surface over time.
- Dense gradation. Fines fill the voids between larger pieces, so the whole layer packs tight.
That's why RCA driveways often feel firmer in year 3 than in year 1.
Year-by-year maintenance
| Years | What happens | What to do | |---|---|---| | 1 to 2 | Settling in tire tracks and soft spots, some edge spread | Drive on it normally. Top up low spots after about 6 months, usually a ton or two. | | 3 to 7 | Surface is set and firm | Walk it each spring. Light rake or drag if needed. | | 8 to 12 | Thinning in tire tracks, occasional pothole where water pools | Light grading every 2 to 3 years, spot top-dress, fix any low spot that holds water. | | 10 to 20 | Surface worn but base is solid | Add a 2 to 3 inch refresh layer over the old driveway and compact. | | 20+ | Mature driveway | Repeat the cycle: grade every few years, refresh every 10 to 15. |
What shortens an RCA driveway's life
- Poor install: too thin (under 4 inches), no compaction, built on topsoil, or no crown.
- Standing water: low spots that hold water undermine the base. Fix grade fast, and add a culvert or French drain where needed.
- Heavy loads on a thin section: regular dump trucks or equipment need 6 to 8 inches.
- Aggressive plowing: raise the blade slightly so it rides above the stone.
When to rebuild instead of refresh
Deep ruts that come back after grading, a base that flexes under a vehicle, or water that won't drain after regrading mean the base has failed. The good news: the old material becomes your new base. Regrade, compact, and add 4 to 6 fresh inches.
RCA vs Gravel for Driveways
"Gravel" here means virgin crushed stone, usually limestone crusher run or #57. Both make good driveways. They're not identical.
| Factor | RCA crusher run | Virgin crushed stone | |---|---|---| | Cost | Typically lower | Typically higher | | Compaction | Excellent, packs very hard | Good | | Long-term firmness | Gets firmer as it lightly self-cements | Stays looser, more top-dressing | | Drainage (with crown) | Excellent | Excellent | | Appearance | Gray, with occasional brick or colored flecks | Uniform; color depends on stone | | Maintenance | Low | Low to moderate | | Environmental | Recycled, keeps concrete out of landfills | Quarried | | Installation | Same steps | Same steps |
Pick RCA when budget, durability, and low maintenance matter more than looks: rural driveways, farm lanes, parking pads, contractor yards, and base under paving.
Pick virgin stone when you want a specific color, an HOA requires a uniform look, or you're matching existing landscape stone.
Or combine them: RCA crusher run for the base layers and a decorative stone top dressing. You get RCA's compaction underneath and the look you want on top. Note we sell RCA only, so the decorative layer would come from another supplier.

When RCA Isn't the Right Call
- You want a bright, uniform decorative surface. RCA looks like recycled concrete.
- You want pavement. RCA is an excellent base under asphalt or concrete, but it isn't a paved surface.
- Very steep grade with heavy runoff. Fines can wash on slopes over about 10%. Add water bars or consider paving the steep section.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best RCA for a driveway?
RCA crusher run, a 3/4-inch minus blend of crushed concrete with the fines left in. The fines fill the gaps between larger pieces so it locks up hard when compacted. RCA #57 has no fines and is better as a drainage layer than a driving surface.
How much RCA do I need for my driveway?
Multiply length by width by depth in feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by 1.4 for tons. A 12 by 100 foot driveway at 4 inches compacted needs about 21 tons, plus roughly 20 percent extra to allow for compaction. Our online calculator does the math for you.
How much does an RCA driveway cost?
Total cost depends on tons needed, base depth, delivery distance, and whether you grade it yourself or hire it out. RCA generally costs less than virgin crushed stone because the raw material is recycled locally. Call (865) 999-0857 for current RCA and delivery pricing.
How long does an RCA driveway last?
A properly installed RCA driveway lasts 20 years or more. Expect light grading every few years and a 2 to 3 inch refresh layer somewhere between years 10 and 20, using the old driveway as the base.
Is RCA better than gravel for a driveway?
For function and value, usually yes. Angular crushed concrete interlocks, residual cement lightly binds it over time, and it typically costs less than virgin stone. Virgin gravel wins when you want a specific color or uniform decorative look.
Can I put RCA over an existing gravel driveway?
Yes. Grade out ruts and potholes, compact the old surface, then add 2 to 4 inches of RCA crusher run and compact it. The old gravel becomes your base layer.
