Most places that advertise it are either bait for a paid service, giveaways on Craigslist that trap you into hauling to a stranger's backyard, or one-day municipal cleanup events that end before you finish loading the truck.

Right now in East Tennessee, there's an actual free option. SMSG in Maryville is running a free-load period where clean concrete and asphalt drops are FREE. No fee at the gate, no per-ton scale, no minimum. This post lays out what's real, what's not, and how to make the most of it.

Why Free, and How Long

Concrete isn't waste to a recycling yard. It's inbound raw material that gets crushed into RCA and sold back to contractors for driveways, road base, backfill, and drainage work. The complete RCA guide walks through what happens after your load hits the pile.

We opened in July 2026 and we're building inbound volume. The free promo is how we're doing it. Once volume settles into a rhythm we'll go back to flat per-vehicle pricing that still runs a fraction of what the landfill charges. Regular rates (currently waived) look like this:

Even at those rates, we're the cheapest option in the region.

What Counts as Clean

Free is contingent on the load being clean. Clean concrete is:

Broken slab, curbs, sidewalks, foundation chunks
Concrete block, CMU, brick, masonry
Precast pieces, pipe, culvert
Natural stone

Not clean:

Concrete with wood, drywall, roofing, or insulation still attached
Painted or chemically treated concrete with heavy chemicals
Dirt-mixed rubble where more than 20 percent is soil
Anything hazardous

What's Not Real

A quick tour of the things people find when they Google "free concrete disposal" so you don't waste an afternoon on them.

Craigslist "free fill wanted" ads. Sometimes real, usually a homeowner who needs a truckload of chunks for erosion control. The catch is they want it delivered, unloaded by hand, and clean. Municipal spring or fall cleanup events. Real, but limited. Most East TN counties run one or two annual drop-off days for residents. Concrete is usually excluded or capped at pickup-load volume. Not a solution for anything larger.

"We haul it free" services. Almost always a paid service in disguise. Free pickup on a $500 minimum job.

Knox County convenience centers. These are for household waste only. Concrete, asphalt, brick, and block are refused. Commercial loads get fined $1,000. Full breakdown in our Knox County convenience center post.
